Data Intelligence Outpost

Building a continuous intelligence engine for product teams
The Challenge
Keeping track of what was happening across competitors, markets, technologies, and the broader industry ecosystem was becoming increasingly difficult.
Information was spread across competitor websites, product announcements, technology blogs, industry publications, Gartner and other analyst sources, conferences, symposiums, and market news. Teams had to manually search through these sources to understand what was changing and whether any of it mattered to our products.
The challenge wasn't a lack of information.
It was turning a constant stream of information into something useful for product decisions.
The Idea
I wanted to move competitive and market intelligence from an ad-hoc research activity to a continuous product capability.
This led to DI Outpost — a tool designed to continuously scan the external environment, identify relevant changes and surface them for product teams.
The idea was simple:
Don't make teams search for intelligence. Bring the intelligence to them.
What it monitors
Competitors
Tracks competitor product updates, launches, strategic moves, capabilities, and where they appear to be heading.
Market trends
Scans industry news, technology publications, blogs, magazines, analyst sources and other market signals to identify emerging trends.
Tools & technology
Continuously monitors updates and changes across the tools and technologies we support, helping teams understand what is changing within our own ecosystem.
Events & conferences
Identifies relevant conferences, symposiums and industry events where we could participate, learn, demonstrate our capabilities, or engage with the broader ecosystem.
Product Approach
The key product challenge was not simply collecting more information.
It was deciding what information was worth surfacing.
I structured DI Outpost around the questions product teams actually needed answered:
What are our competitors doing?
Where is the market moving?
What's changing in the technology ecosystem?
Where are there opportunities for us to participate or respond?
This shifted the tool from being a generic news aggregator to an intelligence layer for product strategy.
The Outcome
DI Outpost was adopted across 13 teams, giving product and customer-facing teams a consistent way to stay informed about developments across competitors, technology, markets, and the broader industry.
The product helped move intelligence gathering from a manual, fragmented process toward a continuous and structured source of inputs for product strategy and roadmap discussions.
What I learned
Building DI Outpost reinforced an important product principle for me:
Information only becomes valuable when it helps someone make a better decision.
The product wasn't successful because it could find more information. It was successful because it helped turn a constantly changing external environment into signals that teams could actually use.
